Russian shelling of Kyiv damages offices of Ukrainian and foreign media - at least six editorial offices damaged

As a result of a massive russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, the offices of Ukrainian and foreign media outlets have been damaged. As of now, at least six newsrooms and media organizations have reported damage to their offices and workspaces.

Serhii Tomilenko, the head of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, has reported this.

According to him, those affected include journalists, editorial staff, and media workers, as well as their family members. The strike killed people and injured dozens. Residential, civilian, and media infrastructure was also damaged.

Among the media outlets whose offices were damaged in Kyiv are the bureau of the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the ARD studio, the editorial office of Realna Gazeta, the UNIAN office, as well as the editorial offices of the online media outlets Graty and Shelter.

Specifically, at the Deutsche Welle Kyiv bureau, the blast wave shattered windows and damaged ceilings. The team was unharmed and continues to work. At the ARD studio, according to journalist Vasyl Golod, window frames, equipment, and the premises were damaged.

The editorial office of Realna Gazeta, which had relocated from the Luhansk Region, suffered serious damage. Editor-in-Chief Andrii Dikhtiarenko reported that not a single window in the building remained intact.

“There isn’t a single intact window left in the newsroom… But everyone is alive,” he said.

The UNIAN office, the editorial office and audio studio of Graty, as well as the office and studio of the media project Shelter, also sustained damage.

Separate reports are coming in about damage to or loss of housing for Kyiv journalists. In particular, the home of the Zakharchenko couple—Artem Zakharchenko and Olena Zakharchenko—has been destroyed.

The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) stated that it is documenting the consequences of attacks on journalists and media outlets and informing international partners. The Union also offered affected newsrooms the use of the Kyiv Center for Journalistic Solidarity as a temporary workspace.

What is known about the shelling of Kyiv on May 25?

As a reminder, on the night of May 24, russian troops carried out a massive ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital.

At least two people were killed and 81 were injured in Kyiv as a result of the shelling. Two men were also reported killed in the Kyiv Region.

During the large-scale nighttime shelling of the capital on the night of May 24, the Ancient Kyiv State Historical and Architectural Reserve came under fire from russian troops. As a result of the attack, the historic heart of the capital suffered significant damage.

Also, during the nighttime attack on Kyiv, the main office of Ukrposhta on Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square was damaged.

Following the russian attack on the night of May 24, approximately 40% of the museum artifacts from the exhibition at the Chornobyl National Museum in Kyiv were irretrievably lost.

On May 25, bus route No. 50 and several tram lines resumed service in the capital after having been rerouted following the russian shelling on the night of May 24.
