An unmanned aerial vehicle attacked the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, located in the western United Arab Emirates (UAE). The attack caused a fire. The Arab television channel Al Jazeera reported this, citing statements from the country’s authorities.

Authorities in the Middle Eastern monarchy stated that today, May 17, an unidentified drone attacked the Barakah nuclear power plant. The strike caused a fire in an electric generator outside the plant’s inner perimeter.

The UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation reported that the drone attack did not affect the plant’s operations. All power units are operating normally, and background radiation levels are within normal limits.

Later, the UAE Ministry of Defense reported that the country had been attacked by three drones. Air defense systems shot down two drones, while the third struck the nuclear power plant’s grounds.

The ministry added that the drones entered UAE airspace from the west, without providing further details. An investigation is underway to determine the source of the attack.

Al Jazeera reports that no one has claimed responsibility for the incident. The UAE has also not publicly accused any country.

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is the only nuclear power plant in the UAE. It is located 250 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi. The plant was commissioned in 2020. It operates four power units with a total capacity of 5,600 MW.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 4, the Iranian armed forces attacked the UAE, firing cruise missiles and strike UAVs at the country. The attack resulted in a massive fire at one of the country’s oil infrastructure facilities.
