The European Union is considering a strategic expansion of the European-standard railway network in Ukraine to connect with Lviv, Kyiv, and Odesa. Magda Kopczyńska, Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission, has announced this, according to Forbes Ukraine.
In the future, the creation of several routes is being considered that will ensure unimpeded connections between Poland and the capital, as well as between Central Europe and southern Ukraine via Uzhhorod.
The implementation of these transportation projects will prioritize security considerations, as the new infrastructure must be not only functional but also adequately protected. An important step in this direction was the expansion of the TEN-T network after 2022, which included Ukrainian routes to Odesa, thereby strengthening the role of the “Solidarity Routes” amid the blockade of seaports.
In addition to rail connections, the European Union emphasizes the need for comprehensive development of border infrastructure, inland waterways, and seaports. The partners’ plans also include preparations for the resumption of operations at Ukrainian airports immediately after the country’s airspace reopens.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, construction has begun in the Lviv Region on Ukraine’s second standard-gauge railway line, which will run from the border with Poland to Sknyliv.
In September, the opening of the Uzhhorod–Chop section of the European gauge railway took place at the Uzhhorod railway station; this section is 22 kilometers long. Thus, Uzhhorod became the first regional center connected to Bratislava, Košice, Budapest, and Vienna via a railway line that is part of the European network. The Euro-gauge line will be extended further to Lviv.
