There will be no mass checks of gun owners after yesterday's terrorist attack in Kyiv. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has stated this on his Telegram channel.
According to him, yesterday's tragedy in Kyiv has rightly raised a number of controversial issues.
"I believe that people should have the right to armed self-defense. Especially after the experience when civilians were given weapons for national resistance at the beginning of a full-scale invasion," he said about the right to firearms (including short-barreled weapons).
According to him, expert discussions will be held in the near future with the participation of MPs, the public, journalists, and the veteran community to prepare the final version of the draft law on civilian weapons.
Klymenko also said that the attacker's mental state was clearly unstable.
"How he obtained the necessary medical certificates to extend his weapons permit must be investigated. This will be done as part of the investigation," the Interior Minister said.
Klymenko also called the police officers' flight from the scene "shameful", but believes that it is incorrect to "make generalizations about the entire police force based on the actions of two officers."
"Our task is to draw conclusions and strengthen the system where it is needed. This is what we are working on now," he added.
As a reminder, criminal proceedings have been opened against two police officers who fled during the terrorist attack.
