Ukraine and Germany have formalized their defense cooperation by signing a strategic bilateral agreement. During the meeting, the parties discussed not only the supply of weapons, but also European integration and the fate of Ukrainian men in Germany. These agreements became known following the talks between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived on an official visit to the German capital on April 14.
The German Chancellor emphasized that Berlin is ready to actively cooperate with Kyiv on the status of Ukrainians of mobilization age abroad.
"Germany will cooperate with Ukraine regarding Ukrainian men who have gone abroad, as it is important that they stay in Ukraine and help it," Friedrich Merz said.
The Chancellor also touched upon Ukraine's membership in the European Union. He noted that this step is strategically necessary for the security and well-being of the whole of Europe, but warned that the accession process itself cannot be fast.
In his turn, President Zelenskyy noted the importance of the signed defense agreement, which strengthens Ukraine's resilience and expands the country's ability to defend itself.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in the event of a ceasefire in Ukraine, almost four million Ukrainians who currently enjoy temporary protection in the European Union may lose their legal status.
