President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to ensure that the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people is granted the legal status of a representative body. This is stated in Decree No. 293 of April 2, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine shall immediately ensure the resolution of the issue of securing the legal status of the representative body of the Crimean Tatar people for the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people in accordance with the established procedure," the document says.
It is noted that such a decision was made in order to facilitate the implementation of the right to sustainable development of the Crimean Tatar people, guarantees of its ethnic, cultural, linguistic, religious identity.
Zelenskyy on Telegram, commenting on the decree, noted that the Mejlis has always been and is a representative body of the Crimean Tatar people, it was and is in fact, and now the authorities are consolidating this legally and politically so that the Mejlis's capabilities are stronger.
The Office of the President explains that the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people was founded in 1991 and is the only supreme authorized representative and executive body of this people, however, all this time it did not have the appropriate legal status. Once this legal issue is resolved, the Mejlis will be able to participate in the development of state programs and fully represent the interests of the Crimean Tatar people.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in May 2025, Zelenskyy appointed Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, former political prisoner of russia Nariman Dzhelialov as ambassador to Turkey.
In May 2023, Zelenskyy headed the Advisory Council on the De-occupation and Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Crimea.
