US running out of targets in Iran: Trump faces tough choices - Politico

US President Donald Trump has extended airstrikes against Iran for a few more weeks, but experts say the Pentagon has almost no strategic targets left to attack.

It was reported by Politico.

According to analysts, most of the important military targets have already been destroyed, and the rest are well-protected underground facilities that are difficult to hit from the air without a ground operation.

"We can just keep working through a list of targets of ever decreasing significance and continue to piss them off to the point that the [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] has a solid lock on the government and they feel justified in waging a holy war against the U.S. in perpetuity," said one defense official.

At the same time, Iran is relying on economic pressure, in particular through the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, which affects world oil prices and creates additional pressure on the White House.

Experts say that the United States is in a difficult situation: key goals are being exhausted, the strait remains blocked, and further steps could lead to escalation.

"In no circumstance can Trump just walk away. He’ll be humiliated if he leaves; and we’ll be in a quagmire if he stays," the Pentagon source said.

Among the possible scenarios, strikes on civilian infrastructure or even a ground operation are being considered, but both scenarios carry significant risks and may require large-scale troop involvement.
