The European Commission has warned of a serious and prolonged energy crisis against the backdrop of the conflict in the Middle East and urged citizens to change their daily habits - in particular, to work from home more often and use transport less.

As Politico reports, the issue of energy security was discussed during an urgent meeting of EU energy ministers. European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen stressed the seriousness of the situation.

"Even if peace came tomorrow, we still will not return to normal life in the foreseeable future. The more you can do to save oil, especially diesel and aviation fuel, the better for us," he said.

Among the recommendations are remote working, reducing speed on the roads, more active use of public transport and shared trips.

At the same time, Brussels emphasizes the need for the rapid development of alternative energy. "This should be the time when we finally turn the tide and become truly energy independent," Jørgensen stressed.

Despite the lack of concrete decisions following the meeting, the EU is expected to present a set of measures to respond to the crisis in the near future. Experts warn that its consequences could be comparable or even more serious than during the energy shocks of the 1970s or the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recall that in two weeks of the Middle East conflict, russia has enriched itself by USD 2 billion.
