Thanks to a significant technological leap and the emergence of its own long-range developments, Ukraine no longer has an urgent need to receive German Taurus cruise missiles. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated this in his speech to the Bundestag.
At the current stage of development of the Ukrainian defense industry, the transfer of a limited number of foreign missiles will not be crucial, as domestic models demonstrate high performance. The head of government explained that his previous statements in support of the supply were based on an assessment of the Bundeswehr's stockpile at the time. However, today, according to the Chancellor, the situation on the battlefield and in the arsenals of the Armed Forces has changed radically.
"Today, Ukraine has its own long-range weapons in its arsenals, which are much more effective than the relatively small number of Taurus cruise missiles that Germany could have provided," Friedrich Merz emphasized. He also added that the Ukrainian army is now "better armed than ever before."
Despite the military successes, the Chancellor drew attention to the change in aid priorities due to the difficult economic situation. He made it clear that the financial challenges facing Kyiv are now more important than the need for new weapons.
"And that's why we won't solve the problem with additional weapons at the moment," Merz said. Thus, the German government is signaling a shift in the focus of support from military and technical to financial stabilization of Ukraine.
As reported earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz leaves the issue of supplying Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles open for strategic reasons so that the aggressor country russia does not understand the next steps of the partner states.
