The President of the European Council, António Costa, called the aggressor state russia the only winner of the war in the Middle East due to the reduced attention to the russian-Ukrainian war and rising energy prices
He said this during a speech at the conference of EU ambassadors.
"So far, there is only one winner in this war – Russia. It steadily undermines Ukraine’s position by flouting international law. It gains new resources to finance its war against Ukraine as energy prices rise. It profits from the diversion of military capabilities that could otherwise have been sent to support Ukraine. And it benefits from the reduced attention to the Ukrainian front as the conflict in the Middle East takes centre stage," Costa said.
He reiterated the statement of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that the EU will fulfill its commitment to provide a loan of EUR 90 billion to Ukraine. He also emphasized the need to continue to put pressure on russia to achieve a just and lasting peace that is acceptable to Ukraine and does not undermine the security of Europe.
Costa also expressed hope that tomorrow, March 11, the EU will approve the extension of the current sanctions and adopt the next package.
In conclusion, the President of the EU Council said that the international system is undergoing fundamental changes and the EU is responding to these changes: "The international system is changing dramatically. A world in which power politics are back in play. The European Union is responding to these changes by becoming more autonomous and more resilient."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the European Union is working on strategic decisions, so that the worsening situation in the Middle East does not lead to delays in the transfer of critical missiles for air defense systems to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Hungary said that the European Commission should lift the ban on oil and gas imports from the aggressor country russia, as the war in the Middle East will increase energy prices for Europe.
Putin threatens to stop gas supplies to the EU ahead of schedule.
