Ukraine has sent interceptor drones and a team of specialists to protect American military bases in Jordan. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this in an interview with The New York Times.
The United States asked Kyiv for help on March 5, and the Ukrainian team left the next day.
"We reacted immediately. I said, yes, of course, we will send our experts," he said.
The team is expected to arrive in Kyiv the following day.
According to the President, Ukraine is eager to help the countries of the region, but must balance such requests with its own defense needs. In addition to the United States, the leaders of Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have addressed the Ukrainian side. Kyiv has offered to exchange its interceptor drones for more powerful air defense systems needed to combat russian ballistic missiles, as the war in Iran could threaten Ukraine's arms supplies. Ukraine is also ready to provide assistance in exchange for diplomatic support to encourage russia to call a truce.
The publication notes that the use of Ukrainian interceptor drones is cost-effective, as they cost only a few thousand dollars. For comparison, one PAC-3 missile for the Patriot system costs about USD 4 million, while the Iranian Shahed drone is estimated at USD 30,000. Thus, Ukrainian developments make it much cheaper to intercept enemy drones compared to traditional air defense systems.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed that Ukraine had received a request from the United States for support in protecting against Shahed drones in the Middle East.
Later, it was decided that Ukrainian specialists would go to the Middle East to protect American bases from Iranian drones.
