The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS) has issued a statement on the critical condition of the Ye.O. Patona Bridge, emphasizing the need for urgent repair work to avoid catastrophic consequences. This was reported by Oleksandr Shymanovskyi, director general of the specialized institute of steel structures.
The structure can still be saved and operated for decades, but delay threatens with accelerated degradation of the load-bearing elements.
Experts note that ignoring the defects identified during last year's inspection could lead to complete destruction of the structures, human casualties and a large-scale transport collapse in the capital.
Specialists of the institute, which designed this bridge and has been monitoring it since 1953, have already developed a clear plan to save the facility. The project involves comprehensive reinforcement of the main beams on the supports, repair of the above-water and underwater parts of the intermediate supports, as well as restoration of the transverse beams and ties of the span structures.
In addition, the technical solution includes the replacement of expansion joints and the renewal of infrastructure elements, such as lighting poles and railings. The NAS emphasizes that the reconstruction must be undertaken urgently, since the condition of the structure requires radical action in the near future.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Kyiv City State Administration denies changing the rules of passage on the Patona Bridge.
In late February, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, commenting on the results of inspections of bridge structures, reported that the technical condition of the Patona Bridge in Kyiv is critical, and the residual resource of the structure is estimated at zero.
In July 2023, the Ministry of Community, Territorial and Infrastructure Development reported that almost 10% of Ukrainian bridges are in a state of disrepair, including the Patona Bridge and the Metro Bridge in Kyiv.
