Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Deputy Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Rudnytskyi said that the operation of the Telegram messenger should be restricted in Ukraine after the terrorist attack in Lviv.
They said this in the evening at a briefing in Kyiv, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"We see that Telegram is being used more often. This question (of restricting its use) is not only for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Security Service of Ukraine. This question should be answered by society as well. If it concerns national security, then we have to limit (the operation). We need to talk about it," Klymenko said.
The deputy head of the SSU supported this idea.
"We need to limit the use," he added.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the night of February 22, explosions occurred in the central part of Lviv after police officers responded to a call about a break-in, which took the life of a police officer and injured 25 people. The SSU classified the incident as a terrorist attack. The alleged bomber was detained. She was recruited via the Telegram messenger by representatives of the russian secret service. The aggressor country has once again used Telegram to recruit terrorists, so it is necessary to restrict the functioning of these platforms to protect people. Zelenskyy called for Telegram restrictions after the terrorist attack in Lviv.
On September 7, 2024, the head of the Defense Ministry's Defense Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said that Telegram poses a threat to Ukraine's national security.
On October 10, 2024, the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting announced that it expects to fully block Telegram in Ukraine.
