Terrorist attack in center of Lviv: policewoman killed and 25 injured, alleged female perpetrator detained

On the night of February 22, in the central part of Lviv, after the police arrived on a call about breaking into a store, explosions were heard, which took the life of a policewoman and injured 25 people. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) qualified the event as a terrorist attack. The alleged female bomber was detained.

This was reported by the National Police, the SSU Directorate in the Lviv Region and the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko.

The police received a report about breaking into a store on Danylyshyna Street at around 00:30 am, and after the patrol police crew arrived at the scene, an explosion occurred. When the second crew arrived, another one was heard.

A 23-year-old policewoman was killed by the explosions, and a patrol police car and a civilian vehicle were also damaged.

The police previously established that improvised explosive devices were detonated.

The SSU qualified the explosions as a terrorist act and opened a criminal case.

The Service specified that the police were informed that two unknown men in dark clothes damaged the blinds and broke the lock on the door of a local store, after which they entered the premises.

Upon the arrival of police crews at the scene, explosions were heard. A policewoman was killed and 25 other people were injured, including a minor.

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko informed that the alleged female bomber of Lviv law enforcement officers was detained and further operational measures and investigative actions are ongoing. In particular, the names of other persons involved in the commission of this crime are being established.

Currently, 11 people are in medical institutions. Six law enforcement officers are in serious condition.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the terrorist attack, saying that Klymenko reported on the detention of a person suspected of committing it.

"The investigation has been provided with all the necessary resources. The necessary procedural actions with the detainee are ongoing. The Ministry of Internal Affairs will inform about all the necessary details," he added.

The deceased during the terrorist attack is 23-year-old policewoman Viktoria Shpylka. The girl is from the Volyn Region, but moved to Kherson with her parents. She graduated from the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs and joined the ranks of the patrol police - first the Kherson Region, and from 2023 - the Lviv Region.

In the fall of last year, Viktoria got married - her husband is also a patrol officer.

"Colleagues remember her as sensitive, bright, and sincere. She knew how to support, listen, and find a kind word even on the hardest day.
