Polish President Karol Nawrocki has signed a document that eliminates the separate system of "special assistance" for Ukrainians, transferring all support instruments to the general law on the protection of foreigners. At the same time, the law extends the period of legal stay of Ukrainian citizens in the country until March 4, 2027. This is reported by RMF24.
One of the main changes was the tightening of registration rules: now Ukrainians are required to apply for a PESEL number within 30 days of entry. Ignoring this requirement will have serious consequences, as it "will lead to the expiration of temporary protection and will be considered as a refusal of this form of support."
Karol Nawrocki has previously warned that he signed the law on preferential assistance "for the last time," emphasizing that in the future Ukrainians will be treated "like other national minorities."
The Polish president has repeatedly criticized the previous rules for the "unfairly large amount of social assistance," so the new version of the law, adopted by parliament in September 2025, integrates Ukrainian refugees into the general legal system for foreigners.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Ireland has also garanteed legal status to Ukrainian refugees until 2027.
The National Bank suggests that the clean return of refugees may begin in 2027.
