Zelenskyy explains that people will not forgive abandonment of Donbas and its fate will be decided by referendum

The fate of any final peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine will be decided by the people. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in an interview with Axios.

The head of state expressed his belief that Ukrainian society will not accept conditions that would mean the final loss of territories and emphasized the agreement with the United States on the mandatory holding of a nationwide referendum. According to Zelenskyy, the scenario of complete abandonment of Donbas will cause an inevitable reaction within the country.

"Emotionally, people will never forgive this. Never. They will not forgive… me, they will not forgive [the US]," Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized.

The President emphasized that it is precisely because of this position of citizens that any agreements affecting sovereignty and borders should go through a referendum

Despite the tough position on the legal renunciation of lands, the President suggested that Ukrainians may support the option of stopping hostilities on the front line.

"Citizens may support the scenario of freezing the conflict on the front line," he noted, adding that this is considered a tool for a ceasefire, not recognition of occupation.

Special attention was paid to security guarantees. According to Zelenskyy, the mechanism for controlling the "silence" has already been actually agreed: it will be carried out using unmanned systems under the direct leadership of the US.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Zelenskyy previously noted that russia would have to "put down" 800,000 of its soldiers to capture the entire Donbas.
