German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that his country and France are negotiating the creation of a European nuclear defense system. He said this during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, Sky News reports.
According to Merz, Europe's first and foremost duty now is to recognize the new reality the continent is facing. The bloc has realized that its freedom is under threat, and therefore must be prepared for changes and sacrifices.
Merz also said that Germany and France are holding confidential talks on the creation of a European nuclear defense system.
"I have started confidential talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on a European nuclear deterrent. We will not allow the emergence of zones with different levels of security in Europe," Merz said.
The chancellor emphasized that Berlin intends to continue to comply with its obligations to abandon the production of nuclear weapons, as well as the possession and disposal of such weapons. However, discussions with Paris are underway to extend the French "nuclear umbrella" to other European countries.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in September 2025, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said that Warsaw would develop its own nuclear capabilities.
As a reminder, in May 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron said that his country is ready to discuss the deployment of its nuclear weapons in Europe.
