The Office of the President commented on the Financial Times' publication about Ukraine's alleged plans to announce elections and a referendum on February 24.
As RBC-Ukraine writes, citing a source in the presidential entourage, it was emphasized on Bankova Street that any voting is possible only if there is an appropriate security situation, and until there is one, no decisions or announcements will be made.
According to the FT, citing sources among Ukrainian and Western officials, Kyiv is allegedly considering announcing presidential elections and a referendum on a peace agreement with russia in the near future, allegedly after pressure from the United States. The material also mentions a demand to hold the vote by May 15 under the threat of losing security guarantees. The Office of the President actually questioned these statements, emphasizing the priority of security during wartime over any electoral processes.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the CEC proposes to the Verkhovna Rada to regulate elections after the termination or abolition of martial law.
Among the key challenges of post-war elections or elections under a state of emergency, the CEC names millions of Ukrainian voters abroad who need to be provided with the opportunity to vote. According to the CEC, out of 6.5 million Ukrainians abroad, 350,000 voters are registered with consular authorities.
