The Verkhovna Rada has an understanding on the need for at least six months from the end of the war to the day of the start of the election campaign.
Olha Aivazovska, the head of the board of the civil network Opora, wrote about this on her page on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
Regarding information in the media about President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's intention to announce a plan for presidential elections and a referendum on a peace agreement with russia on February 24, Aivazovska noted that making some kind of political statement regarding the elections on February 24 is a complete failure to understand the mood of society and the trauma associated with this date.
"I don't really understand in which hot-headed person the idea could arise to link the day of the start of full-scale aggression with the date when the need to hold elections in Ukraine will be announced. I remind you that the level of support for elections during the hot phase of the war in Ukraine is about 10% even after the latest scandals," she noted.
Aivazovska noted that work in groups on developing legislation for the first post-war elections continues, but there is an understanding that at least six months are needed from the end of martial law to the day the election campaign begins.
"The more debates around the articles and provisions of the law on elections, the more understanding that even these terms are very optimistic," she noted.
Aivazovska also noted that there are currently no votes in parliament to make decisions.
"After developing the legal framework in the form of a bill, we will have to hold more than one meeting with factions and groups, where other interests will begin to act and come into play: in addition to political ones, current life interests (sanctions, investigations, etc.). This part may be difficult and lengthy, because there is no longer a unanimous coalition that could make decisions independently," the head of Opora noted.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, according to the Financial Times, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will officially announce the start of the electoral processes on February 24 - on the symbolic fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion, and there is talk of holding elections and a referendum in May.
This step is a response to tough pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump, which insists on completing the negotiation process this spring, as the White House has set a deadline for holding elections on May 15, 2026. If these deadlines are not met, Washington threatens to deprive Kyiv of the proposed security guarantees.
