The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) director Semen Kryvonos responded to criticism that state funding for the NABU is not comparable to the funds the bureau returns to the state budget as a result of exposing corruption schemes.
He said this at a press conference, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"Are we a fiscal authority? Where is our fiscal function? We have no fiscal function. Or do you want to say that all law enforcement agencies are self-supporting? It is not our main function to return funds to the state budget. This is deliberately manipulated by our opponents," Kryvonos said.
He noted that the State Bureau of Investigation also fights corruption, but the level of their state funding is higher than that of the NABU.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the NABU returned to the budget as a result of the fight against corruption 9 times less than it spent on itself. It was proposed to increase funding for the NABU in 2026 by 16% to UAH 2.5 billion. Starting in January, NABU will receive UAH 2.6 billion in funding per year, while last year it returned only UAH 680 million to the budget. Without the Bureau, the Ukrainian budget would have an additional UAH 2 billion annually, says political expert Oleh Posternak.
