The United Nations and the organizers of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics have called for a seven-week pause in all global conflicts a week before the start of the games, Euronews reported on Friday, January 30.
Backed by a UN General Assembly resolution, the proposed time-out covers the Winter Games from February 6-22 and the Paralympic Games from March 6-15, with an additional week on either side.
"For ethical reasons, we want to send a message that the Olympic Truce, the Sacred Olympic Truce, must be respected," said Constantinos Filis, director of the International Olympic Truce Centre in Athens.
Supporters of this initiative argue that in practice it is not always possible to establish an Olympic truce, but it is necessary to create even a small space for peace.
"I believe that the Olympics are a great moment to symbolize peace, respect for international law and international cooperation," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on November 20, 2025, the UN General Assembly approved a resolution proposed by Italy on a truce during the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
On October 7, 2025, Italy proposed to the United Nations to establish a truce for the duration of the Winter Olympic Games.
As a reminder, the mascot of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games is a stylized stoat, Tina, who represents the spirit of the modern Olympics and combines traditions and a modern approach to organizing the Games.
