German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Ukraine's accession to the European Union in 2027 is unrealistic and has no chance of being realized.
It was reported by NW.
After consultations between the leaders of the SPD and the CDU/CSU in Berlin, Merz clearly outlined the position of the German side: "Accession on January 1, 2027 is excluded. It is impossible."
According to him, any candidate state must fully comply with the Copenhagen criteria, and the process of adaptation to EU standards usually takes years. Therefore, the Chancellor considers it inappropriate to expect such a rapid accession of Ukraine.
At the same time, Merz emphasized that it is crucial for Kyiv to maintain a clear European perspective. According to him, the EU can continue to deepen cooperation with Ukraine step by step and bring it closer to the Union.
"We can gradually bring Ukraine closer to the European Union. This is always possible, but such a quick accession is simply not advisable," the German Chancellor summarized.
We remind that Ukraine's accelerated accession to the European Union is one of the points of the plan to end the war and can take place as early as January 1, 2027.
