US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the territorial claim to the Donbas is the key remaining issue in the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. His words are cited by CNN on Wednesday, January 28.

"I know there’s active work going to try to see if both sides’ views on that can’t be reconciled. It’s still a bridge we haven’t crossed," Rubio told lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

According to him, the negotiators managed to narrow down the number of issues to one central one, which was very difficult, but the work continues. Rubio admitted that it is difficult for Ukraine to even consider "the idea of territorial concessions." The US Secretary of State also emphasized that he keeps in touch with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner "probably 10 times a day," and called the pace of development of events variable and dynamic.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 28, The Kyiv Independent, citing US officials, said, that russian negotiators behind closed doors demonstrate a much more pragmatic position than the kremlin in its radical public statements.
