During a large-scale round of consultations in the UAE on January 23-24, Ukrainian and russian delegations held a bilateral meeting. Axios reported this, citing its own sources among Ukrainian officials.
The talks were held without the presence of US representatives. Despite the fact that the main part of the dialogue in Abu Dhabi was mediated by the American side, the negotiating groups found an opportunity for direct contact.
In addition, the delegations of both countries met separately with the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It is worth noting that the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly acted as an intermediary between Ukraine and russia, in particular in organizing prisoner of war exchanges. The current visit of the delegations to Abu Dhabi is another stage in the involvement of the Emirati side in the negotiation process.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that during the first round of talks in Abu Dhabi, the Ukrainian delegation received some answers from russia, but he did not provide details. Subsequently, the head of the negotiating team, Rustem Umerov, explained that the parties discussed the parameters for ending the war and the further logic of the negotiation process.
Reuters claimed that there are currently no signs of softening of positions on territorial issues between Ukraine and russia at the talks in Abu Dhabi.
