US President Donald Trump is considering the idea of a "duty-free zone" for Ukraine to stimulate its economy. He hopes this will help put an end to russia's war in Ukraine.
Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said this in Davos on January 22, Euronews reports.
"The president has talked about a tariff-free zone from Ukraine that I think would be game-changing," Witkoff said at the Ukrainian Breakfast at the World Economic Forum.
At the same time, he said that negotiations on a peaceful settlement are now reduced to one last issue, without specifying what exactly it is.
"I think we made a lot of progress. I think in the beginning of this process there was a little bit of confusion. I was going to Moscow quite a bit, but I think it was important that we go there because we're at the end now and I actually am optimistic," he said.
While speaking at the event, Witkoff also said that he would leave for moscow on Thursday. On Thursday, however, the kremlin reacted coolly to comments that a peace deal was close.
"Discussion will continue on the Ukrainian settlement issue and other related topics," kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
He said US representatives, including Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, are expected to arrive in moscow on Thursday evening and meet with russian president vladimir putin.
As a reminder, in Davos, the Ukrainian delegation met with the US President's Special Envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.
