Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis commented on the discussion surrounding Greenland that arose after US President Donald Trump's statements, saying that he specifically purchased a globe in order to clearly visualize the location of the island.
The head of government stated this during a press conference after a Cabinet meeting. His words are quoted by the Novinky publication.
According to Babis, he bought a large globe worth CZK 15,000 in order to know exactly where Greenland is located.
At the same time, the Prime Minister noted that he could not say that he supports Greenland itself, but recognized Donald Trump's arguments regarding security threats from russia and China as well-founded.
Babis explained his position with the example of a possible missile strike. According to him, the russian Oreshnik ballistic missile would fly from russian territory to the White House in about 26 minutes, and would be over Greenland by the 11th minute of the flight. That is why, in his opinion, the US President's considerations regarding the role of the island in the context of the confrontation with China and russia are correct and require further agreements.
What is known about Trump's encroachment on Greenland
The essence of Donald Trump's claims is that the US, according to him, needs control over Greenland for security reasons. He claims that Denmark is allegedly unable to adequately protect the island from potential threats from russia, and declares Washington's readiness to take on this role. Against the background of these statements, Trump also uses economic pressure, in particular, threatening to introduce trade tariffs, to strengthen the US position on Greenland.
US President Donald Trump said that Greenland is necessary for the United States for the "Golden Dome" and NATO, he added, should pave the way for it. In addition, he noted that he is taking US military power to a new level.
Also, after a conversation with NATO head Mark Rutte, Trump made another statement about Greenland, accusing Denmark of inaction against the "russian threat".
EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas stressed that only russia and China would benefit from the disagreements within NATO. She emphasized that the issue distracted from the "main task" - ending the russian-Ukrainian war.
Meanwhile, the US leadership discussed the option of paying one-time aid to Greenland residents as part of a campaign to discuss the island's accession to the US. While only 17% of Americans approve of Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland, a significant majority of Democrats and Republicans oppose the use of military force to annex the island.
