Ukraine enters top league of green energy - ex-CEO of GTSO Makohon

In 2025, Ukraine exported over 11.2 million cubic meters of biomethane to the EU.

This was announced by the former CEO of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSO) Serhii Makohon on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Makohon noted that this is not a one-time case, but a structural shift.

The exporters were MHP about 8.7 million cubic meters (about 77% of all exports), VITAGRO - 2.5 million cubic meters and Hals Agro – 75,000 cubic meters.

Bio-LNG also entered the world markets: MHP over 5,000 tons and UM Liquid Gas - about 900 tons.

He wrote that Europe needs low-carbon gas, and Ukraine has something that almost no one else has: agricultural residues; manure and livestock waste; logistics and connection to the EU gas network.

It is noted that biomethane converts agricultural waste into exportable, dispatchable, bankable energy, and this is currency.

"At a time when the country critically needs euros and dollars for imports, defense and recovery, biomethane is becoming a new item of energy export along with grain, metal and IT," Makohon wrote.

Makohon noted that this is not "green PR", but a heavy energy infrastructure that works together with the EU climate policy and brings hard currency to the Ukrainian economy.

And therefore, in the future, Ukraine needs more plants, larger volumes, better carbon indicators, higher prices and real project financing instead of subsidies.

Ukraine is gradually becoming one of the most interesting biomethane hubs in Europe.

Green energy is the production of electricity and heat from inexhaustible natural resources (sun, wind, water, biomass), which causes minimal harm to the environment, does not create CO2 emissions, unlike fossil fuels, and is becoming increasingly important for energy independence and climate goals, especially for Ukraine, which is actively developing this area, introducing a "green tariff" to stimulate investment.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in December, compared to November, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 53% to almost 640,000 MWh.

Electricity supplies from Ukraine abroad have been completely stopped since November 11, 2025.
