Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets invited representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to visit Ukraine after the organization expressed concern about the strikes on cities of the aggressor country russia.
Lubinets said this on his official Telegram channel on Friday, January 16.
While on a working visit to Geneva, Lubinets met with the President of the Red Cross Mirjana Spoljaric Egger. The Ukrainian ombudsman expressed his disagreement and indignation with the statement of the organization's regional director for Europe and Central Asia.
"The wording that puts the aggressor state and the defended state on the same level is unacceptable, and at this level it is also dangerous. Russia is waging war and is deliberately targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leaving millions of people without heat, light and water in the freezing cold. Our citizens, in particular children, are freezing in kindergartens, schools, on the street and at home," Lubinets wrote.
The Ombudsman reminded Egger that the russian army regularly strikes civilian objects: educational institutions, hospitals and residential buildings. He also invited the ICRC President to visit Ukraine and see the consequences of the occupiers' strikes with his own eyes.
"For example, to spend a day in our office and understand how people work in such conditions. And how they live in houses where there is only 3 hours of light a day, where the indoor temperature is +7 - as it is now on the streets of Geneva. Perhaps then the words on paper will begin to correspond to reality again," Lubinets added.
In his post, the Ukrainian ombudsman is referring to a recent statement by the Red Cross, in which the organization expressed concern about strikes on critical infrastructure. The ICRC listed both Ukrainian and russian cities.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 12, 2024, russian troops shelled a vehicle of the ICRC humanitarian mission, which was in the frontline zone of the Donetsk Region. The organization condemned the attack, but did not mention who was responsible for the attack.
