The aggressor country of russia has once again declared alleged control over Kupyansk in the Kharkiv Region, which in recent months has been almost completely cleared by the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The commander of the russian group of forces "West" Sergey Kuzovlev informed the russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov about this, Interfax reports.
According to Kuzovlev, all areas of Kupyansk "are under full control" of russian troops. At the same time, Ukrainian counterattacks were allegedly unsuccessful and were repelled.
"The areas are under our control, but we assess that the enemy has not abandoned its plan. Its, let's say, offensive operation, which it conducted in December-November, was not successful," the russian general said.
Russia has been lying about the capture and control of Kupyansk for two months
Russian officials have been claiming for almost two months that the russian army is allegedly holding Kupyansk. The first time this was stated was by the Chief of the General Staff of the russian armed forces Valery Gerasimov on November 20, 2025. Since then, this statement has been repeated several times by russian dictator vladimir putin and a couple of times by russian generals.
All this time, russian propaganda has been spreading fake news about Kupyansk, trying to pass off what it wants as reality. So, at first the occupiers showed a video allegedly shot in Kupyansk. Later it turned out that the video was recorded 20 kilometers from the city.
Later, the official TV channel of the russian Ministry of Defense showed a video in which, as it is claimed, russian soldiers enter Kupyansk. However, a few days later the occupiers themselves admitted that in the video the russian soldiers do not enter, but leave the city.
It is also worth recalling that russian propagandists have reluctantly admitted that the Ukrainian Defense Forces managed to clear most of Kupyansk and block several hundred russian soldiers in the city center.
What is happening in Kupyansk
After the successful operation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, from 100 to 200 russian soldiers were blocked in Kupyansk. The Ukrainian military continues to clear the city, but does so in stages to minimize losses.
As a reminder, on January 5, the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine showed how the search and neutralization of the occupiers in Kupyansk is taking place. And on January 12, the National Guard of Ukraine fighters showed a video of the clearing of the Kupyansk city council.
