The Verkhovna Rada has appointed Denys Shmyhal as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy. The decision was voted for by 248 deputies out of the minimum 226 required, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
Shmyhal, 50, has served as Defense Minister since July 2025.
From March 4, 2020, to July 16, 2025, he was Prime Minister.
Since February 2020, he has served as Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Communities and Territoriies Development.
In August 2019 - February 2020, he headed the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration.
Earlier, Shmyhal was the head of the Burshtyn thermal power plant (Ivano-Frankivsk Region).
He also worked as deputy head of the main department of the Ministry of Revenue and Duties in the Lviv Region and head of the economy department of the Lviv Regional Administration.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on Tuesday, January 13, The Verkhovna Rada dismissed Shmyhal from the post of Defense Minister, but refused to appoint him to the post of First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy - 210 MPs voted for the relevant decision out of the minimum required 226.
On January 9, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk said that the Verkhovna Rada had received a resignation letter from Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.
In early January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed that First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov become the new head of the Ministry of Defense. At the same time, Zelenskyy offered Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal the post of First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy.
On November 19, amid a corruption scandal in the energy sector, the Verkhovna Rada dismissed Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk, she has held this position since July 2025, before that she was the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources since September 2024.
