The Verkhovna Rada has dismissed Denys Shmyhal from the post of Defense Minister. The corresponding decision was voted for by 265 MPs out of the minimum required 226, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
Shmyhal had served as Defense Minister since July 2025
Prior to that, Shmyhal served as Prime Minister from March 4, 2020, to July 16, 2025.
Since February 2020, he has been Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Communities and Territories Development.
In August 2019-February 2020, he served as the head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration.
Earlier, Shmyhal was the head of the Burshtyn thermal power plant (Ivano-Frankivsk Region).
He also worked as a deputy head of the main department of the Ministry of Revenue and Duties in the Lviv Region and head of the economy department of the Lviv Regional Administration.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 9, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk said that the Verkhovna Rada had received a resignation letter from Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.
In early January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed that First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov become the new head of the Defense Ministry.
At the same time, Zelenskyy offered Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal the post of First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy.
