History matters. Denmark responds to US accusations of "occupation" of Greenland

Trump's Special Envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, said that Greenland was occupied by Denmark after World War II. In Denmark, they recalled the international recognition of Greenland as part of Denmark, as well as the right of the Greenlanders themselves to decide their future.

"History matters. The U.S. defended Greenland’s sovereignty during WWII when Denmark couldn’t. After the war, Denmark re-occupied it—side stepping and ignoring UN protocol. This should be about hospitality, not hostility," said Special Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry.

Meanwhile, Danish Ambassador to the United States Jesper Møller Sørensen recalled some episodes in the relations between the United States, Denmark and Greenland.

"The Kingdom of Denmark has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the United States. After 9/11, Denmark answered the US' call. We lost more soldiers in Afghanistan per capita than any other NATO ally," he emphasized.

Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for centuries. This has been repeatedly recognized by US administrations, at the UN and internationally.

Only the people of Greenland should decide their future. The vast majority of Greenlanders voted in favor of self-government status within the Kingdom. This week, all five parties in the Greenlandic parliament reiterated that they do not want to become a US.

For 80 years, Denmark, Greenland and the United States have successfully cooperated on Arctic security.

"Let's continue to address security challenges in the Arctic as partners and allies," he summarized.

NATO countries are considering launching a separate joint mission to monitor and ensure security in the Arctic region, in particular around Greenland. Germany intends to formally propose the initiative.

Meanwhile, Trump said that russia or China will occupy Greenland if the island is not controlled by the United States.
