The administration of US President Donald Trump is working on a draft agreement for Greenland, which they plan to submit to the island's authorities in the future.
This is reported by The Economist.
According to the publication, the format of the Free Association Agreement is being discussed in the US. This model of cooperation involves economic support from Washington and improving socio-economic conditions for the inhabitants of Greenland.
The United States is already implementing similar agreements with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau: the US provides funding, and the partners transfer powers in the field of defense to them, while maintaining internal self-government.
As The Economist notes, the Trump team's strategy for Greenland has two key goals - to increase tensions in relations between Copenhagen and Nuuk and to try to build a direct dialogue with the island's authorities, bypassing Denmark.
At the same time, the publication considers the scenario of Greenland's direct accession to the US unlikely and emphasizes that Washington's rhetoric has caused concern among European political leaders.
The Economist also recalls that there is already a US military base in Greenland, and current agreements with Denmark do not limit the number of US military personnel. However, a significant increase in the contingent will likely require agreement with the Danish side.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Trump previously stated that the United States "needs Greenland" for national security, not for the sake of minerals.
At the same time, Trump's envoy to Greenland stated that the US is not going to annex the island.
However, Trump does not rule out a forceful scenario regarding Greenland.
