The United States does not intend to annex Greenland. At the same time, Washington is going to start negotiations with the residents of the Danish semi-autonomous region on the best way to develop the island.
The corresponding statement was made by the newly appointed US Presidential Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry, his words are cited by The Associated Press (AP).
In his first such comment, Landry said that the Donald Trump administration is not going to interfere in the affairs of other countries or try to take over someone's country.
"Well, I think our discussions should be with the actual people in Greenland — the Greenlanders. What are they looking for? What opportunities have they not gotten? Why haven’t they gotten the protection that they actually deserve?" Landry said on Fox News.
AP writes that Landry's comment seems to be somewhat at odds with Trump's position. The head of the White House has repeatedly stated the need to capture Greenland in the interests of US security. He also did not rule out the use of military force to establish control over the island.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, only yesterday, December 23, President Trump said that the United States needs Greenland for security, not for minerals.
Earlier this month, the Danish Military Intelligence published a report stating that the United States pose a threat to the security of the kingdom because of Trump's statements about his desire to take over Greenland.
In May of this year, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that the island will never become a property that anyone can buy.
