Britain and France stand in defense of Greenland amid Trump's statements

Britain and France stand in defense of Greenland after Trump's new statements.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on January 5 that no one but Greenland and Denmark should decide the future of Greenland itself, commenting on US President Donald Trump's statements about its purchase. French Foreign Minister Pascal Confavreux also stressed that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the Danes.

He told Sky News about this.

"Let me be clear on Greenland: the future of Greenland belongs to Greenland [and] the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark is a close European ally, a close NATO ally, and therefore the future should belong to Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark and only Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. We understand that absolutely clearly," he stressed.

Asked about Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's call for Trump to stop threatening Greenland, Starmer said "I support her" and that she was "right about the future of Greenland."

In addition, France had previously expressed its "solidarity" with Denmark after the President's latest threats. According to The Guardian, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux stressed that "borders cannot be changed by force."

"Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the Danes, and it is up to them to decide what to do with it," he added.

Earlier in the evening, US President Donald Trump said that the US "needs" Greenland.

"We need Greenland from a national security perspective. It is of great strategic importance. Greenland is currently covered by Russian and Chinese ships," he said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Trump previously said that the United States "needs Greenland" for national security, not for minerals.

At the same time, Trump's envoy to Greenland said that the United States is not going to annex the island.
