Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may have a phone conversation with the kremlin chief vladimir putin for the first time in more than five years. It was reported by Fox News.

According to the source of the publication, the impetus for a possible contact was the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which took place the day before in Mar-a-Lago. "Sunday's talks between President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy could pave the way for the first call between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin in more than five years," Fox News notes.

An interlocutor of the publication emphasized that the organization of a direct telephone conversation between Zelenskyy and putin would be a "diplomatic victory" for the US president. "If Putin had joined in a call Sunday, this would have been the greatest achievement in the preparation of the peace talks and the first real step in the peace process. This would be [a] diplomatic victory for President Trump," the source emphasized.

According to him, Donald Trump currently looks like the most successful mediator, because "Putin and Zelenskyy, perceive each other emotionally, and it is a challenge." It is also reported that during the talks in Florida, a 20-point peace plan supported by the United States, developed over several weeks, was discussed. The document envisages compromises by both Kyiv and moscow "to engage Zelenskyy and possibly hold direct talks with him."

Fox News also reminds that direct contacts between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the kremlin head vladimir putin actually stopped in the summer of 2020. "The one difficulty they have is that Putin has refused to talk to Zelenskyy since July 2020, when they spoke over the Wagner scandal and the failed operation to detain Russian Wagner militants," the source said.

According to him, relations between the two leaders were tense even before the complete severance of contacts. "Before that point in 2020, calls between Zelenskyy and Putin were never friendly, and there was always tension between them. During talks, Putin was always taciturn, and Zelenskyy tried to establish a rapport," the source said.

The source also claims that opportunities to resume negotiations existed in August and September 2024, but they disappeared after Ukrainian troops entered the Kursk Oblast.

To recap, vladimir putin refused to consider the possibility of a ceasefire for the time of the possible referendum in Ukraine on the so-called "peace plan," Trump said.
