The newly appointed Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said that US statements regarding the mineral-rich Arctic island are disrespectful, and that Greenland "will never, ever become property that anyone can buy." ABC News reports.
Nielsen made this statement against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's interest in establishing control over the strategic territory. The Greenlandic Prime Minister made his statement while standing next to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
"The statements by the United States were disrespectful. The words used were disrespectful. That is why we need to stick together in this situation," Nielsen stressed.
In turn, the Danish Prime Minister noted that Denmark will invest more in the development of the island.
"Denmark has the will to invest in Greenlandic society, and we do it not only for historical reasons. We also do it because we are part of the [Danish – ed.] commonwealth," Frederiksen said.
Frederiksen and Nielsen also said they were ready to meet with US President Donald Trump to announce a common position on Greenland.
US President Donald Trump had previously said that the seizure of Greenland "will happen 100%." One possible scenario is the seizure of the island by force.
