Ukraine's Security Service neutralized an Il-38N anti-submarine aircraft that could have disrupted the operation before a successful attack on a russian Varshavyanka-class submarine in the port of Novorossiysk.
This is stated in the service's message.
It is a modernized reconnaissance aircraft designed for maritime reconnaissance, submarine search, control of waters, mining and torpedo strikes. In the Black Sea, russian troops had only one such aircraft capable of detecting Ukrainian Sub Sea Baby underwater drones. It was this aircraft that actively countered the attacks of the Defense Forces. Its estimated cost is USD 24 million.
The SSU used a drone with a warhead that exploded in midair to destroy the Il-38N at the Yeysk airbase. As a result of the explosion, about two thousand warheads damaged the compartment with key equipment and radars, as well as one of the aircraft's engines.
As a reminder, the attack on the Varshavyanka diesel-electric submarine took place on December 15 in the port of Novorossiysk. According to the SSU, Sub Sea Baby drones caused critical damage to the vessel, effectively disabling it. The submarine was carrying four Kalibr cruise missile launchers.
Submarines of this type are known as "Black Hole" because of the hull's ability to absorb noise and remain invisible to hydroacoustic systems.
