Ukraine's population has fallen from 42 million before the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country russia in February 2022 to less than 36 million. By 2051, this figure could drop to 25 million. It was reported by Reuters on Thursday, December 4, citing data from the Institute of Demography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The publication writes that the demographic collapse in Ukraine is gaining momentum. According to the CIA World Factbook for 2024 (a reference resource created by the US Central Intelligence Agency), the country has one of the highest mortality rates in the world: for every birth, there are about three deaths. Experts estimate that by 2051 there will be 25 million Ukrainians left.

"According to government estimates, the average life expectancy for men in Ukraine has decreased from 65.2 years before the war to 57.3 years in 2024. Among women, this figure dropped from 74.4 to 70.9. Experts and politicians say that Ukraine will need millions of people to rebuild its shattered economy and to be able to defend itself in the post-war future if Moscow attacks again, as many Ukrainians fear," the article says.

The authorities estimate that the demographic strategy will help bring the population back to 34 million by 2040, but also warn that by then it could fall to 29 million if the current trend continues.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 30, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the strategy of demographic development of Ukraine for the period up to 2040, which envisages an increase in population from 31.1 million people in 2024 to 33.9 million people in 2040.

On December 4, 2024, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said that Ukraine's population will decrease to 35.8 million people, down from 42 million in 2022, and may drop to 25.2 million by 2051.

On March 15, 2024, then-Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that every Ukrainian family should have at least three children for Ukraine to have prospects.
