US President Donald Trump is ready to sign a bill imposing new sanctions against the aggressor country of russia, but only if he retains the right to make the final decision.
Reuters reported this with reference to an unnamed senior White House official.
The source said that Trump is not against the fact that senators are drafting a bill to impose sanctions on countries that do business with russia. He also said that lawmakers may accept his proposal to add Iran to the sanctions list.
At the same time, the Trump administration will insist on specific wording to ensure that the president retains control over sanctions.
"It's always been important to the White House and the president that there's a carve-out in the sanctions package that ensures the president has the ultimate decision-making authority on the sanctions," the official said. "So as long as that is included, I think the president would entertain signing the bill," the source said.
He also said that Washington intends to continue to work on negotiations with russia to end the war in Ukraine.
"We're definitely still working it. It just hasn't been the center of the news because we have so much going on," the White House official added.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, yesterday, November 17, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said, that the US Senate has begun the process of adopting a bill that would give Trump the right to impose new sanctions against russia.
The day before, on November 16, the US President announced "severe" sanctions against countries that trade with russia while financing the war against Ukraine.
