Ukraine's two nuclear power plants, Khmelnytskyi and Rivne, have been forced to reduce electricity production after russian troops attacked a critical electrical substation. This mode of operation has been in place for ten days. It was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
As a result of the attack on the power substation, the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne NPPs were disconnected from one of the two 750 kV power lines. The power system operator also ordered to reduce power generation at the reactors. As of November 17, one of the damaged lines has been restored, while the other is still out of service.
The IAEA notes that the substations are "critical nodes" in the country's electricity grid that provide power to nuclear power plants.
"Following the latest military activity targeting a substation, during the night of 7 November, the Khmelnitskyy and Rivne NPPs were each disconnected from one of their two 750 kilovolt (kV) power lines. In addition, the grid operator ordered a reduction in electricity output of some of their reactors," the statement said.
Three reactors continue to operate at limited capacity at the request of the grid operator.
"Reliable off-site power is vital for the maintenance and operation of nuclear safety functions. To this end, Agency experts will, through dedicated expert missions, continue to assess the functionality of substations critical for nuclear safety and security," Grossi said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that there are grounds to believe that russia is planning to strike at substations critical to the power supply of nuclear power plants, representatives of the hostile Rosatom are involved in planning russian strikes on substations.
It was also noted that nuclear safety in Ukraine remains extremely unstable after the next strikes by the military of the aggressor country russia.
