The Pentagon has given the White House the green light to provide Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles. The final decision on the transfer remains with US President Donald Trump. This was reported by CNN on Friday, October 31, citing three informed American and European officials.
According to the Pentagon's assessment, the US has a sufficient stock of Tomahawk missiles, so their transfer to Ukraine would not have a negative impact on defense capabilities. The Marine Corps and the Army have developed ground-based launchers that could be provided to Ukraine, CNN writes.
"Trump has not taken the issue of these missiles off the table at all, and the administration has developed plans to quickly deliver them to Ukraine if Trump gives the order. In recent weeks, Trump has also become so frustrated with putin's unwillingness to seriously consider peace talks that last week he approved new US sanctions on russian oil companies and canceled - for now - a planned meeting with putin in Budapest to discuss Ukraine," the report said.
According to the officials, US defense officials are concerned about how Ukraine will train and deploy the missiles. There are still several operational issues that need to be resolved before Ukraine can effectively use the missiles, the sources added. CNN notes that the Joint Chiefs of Staff informed the White House of its assessment earlier this month, just before Trump met with Zelenskyy.
