US pressuring Hungary to stop buying gas and oil from russia - Whitaker

Washington has expressed dissatisfaction with Hungary's inaction in getting rid of dependence on Russian gas and expects Budapest to take concrete steps in the near future to reduce its energy dependence on Russia. This was reported by US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker on Fox News.

The Ambassador said that the US expects Hungary, Slovakia and Turkey to develop and implement a plan to overcome dependence on russian energy. He stressed that Hungary, unlike its neighbors, has not yet taken any active measures.

"The United States expects countries like Hungary, Slovakia, and Turkey to develop a plan to wean themselves off russian energy and implement it. You know, Hungary, unlike many of its neighbors, has not developed any plans and has not taken any active measures. Therefore, we will continue to work with them, as well as with their neighbors, such as Croatia and other countries that can help them wean themselves off russian energy," Whitaker said.

He also said that the United States "is ready to help Hungary get rid of this dependence."

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is actively working to find ways to circumvent US sanctions imposed on russian oil giants, in particular Lukoil and Rosneft.

The United States has imposed new sanctions on leading russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. The restrictions are aimed at increasing economic pressure on the Kremlin over its war against Ukraine.

As a reminder, the White House later explained that Trump decided to impose sanctions due to the lack of real steps towards ending the war on the part of russia.
