At 4 a.m. on October 26, Ukrainians set their clocks back an hour to 3 a.m. Thus, the day will last one hour longer.
Clocks on smartphones and other devices with automatic updates have changed the time on their own. The transition is regulated by a 1996 resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which stipulates that the clocks are reset on the last Sunday of March and October.
In Ukraine, this practice has been in place since 1981, when it was introduced to save electricity. Last year, the Verkhovna Rada approved a bill to abolish daylight saving time, but the president did not sign it, so the changes did not come into force.
More than 60 countries around the world, including most of Europe, are currently switching to winter and summer time. Russia has abandoned this practice, obliging residents of the occupied territories to live according to their own time zone.
In July 2024, the Verkhovna Rada supported in the second reading the bill to abolish seasonal time change. The initiative provided for Ukraine's transition to permanent winter time. The bill was subsequently signed by the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, and on August 21, it was sent to Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his signature. However, the President has not signed it.
Thus, the time change is still taking place twice a year.
Scientists at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine believe that the refusal to change the time is useful for the health of citizens, as well as in the interests of Ukraine.
