Some countries should impose sanctions on russian oil and gas much faster - Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that, in his opinion, there are countries that should move much faster on the issue of imposing sanctions on russian oil and gas.

He said this during a press conference following the results of the Coalition of the Willing, Sky News reports.

Thus, the leaders were asked whether the sanctions on russian oil and gas were "three and a half years late". According to the journalist, EU countries have purchased russian energy resources worth more than EUR 215 billion since the beginning of the war in 2022.

"Better now than never," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in response to the question.

Meanwhile, Keir Starmer emphasized that the Coalition of the Willing, the EU and other countries have been working on sanctions against russian energy resources for months and years.

"I think when we talk about wanting to take oil and gas off the market, it's important that we describe the end of the process, not the beginning of it. … I think it's very important to keep up the pressure. There are countries that I think should be moving much faster on this issue," Starmer said.

Recall that on October 22, the US imposed sanctions on leading russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. The restrictions are aimed at increasing economic pressure on the Kremlin over its war against Ukraine.

On October 23, the European Union on the morning of October 23 finally approved the 19th package of sanctions against russia. It includes, among other things, a ban on the import of russian liquefied gas.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is actively working to find ways to circumvent US sanctions imposed on russian oil giants, in particular Lukoil and Rosneft.
