US Vice President J.D. Vance said that Ukraine and the aggressor country russia are not ready to conclude a peace agreement, despite months of negotiations to resolve the conflict.
Vance said this in an interview with the American TV channel Newsmax on Thursday, October 16.
"As much as energetic diplomacy from the president of the United States can get people to the one-yard line, eventually you have to have the two parties who are willing to cut a deal," Vance emphasized.
He added that a settlement is still possible, but that much more work needs to be done.
The reason for the lack of progress, Vance said, is a fundamental mismatch of expectations, with moscow "tending to think" that the russian army is "more successful on the battlefield than it actually is."
According to him, the negotiations in recent months have made progress, but the russian position has made it difficult to reach an agreement.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on October 9, US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine and russia would sit down to the negotiating table in the near future.
On September 13, the russian dictator's spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced a pause in the peace talks between Ukraine and russia.
Shortly before, Axios wrote that the US administration believes that the European Union is to blame for the failure of the talks between Ukraine and russia.
