The United States, according to unofficial reports, has been helping Ukraine launch long-range strikes on russian energy facilities for several months by providing intelligence. This is reported by the Financial Times, according to DW.
US intelligence allows Kyiv to plan attacks on russia's key energy facilities, including oil refineries located far behind the front lines, the newspaper's sources said. Washington's support has increased since mid-summer and has been crucial in carrying out the strikes that were approved by the former Joe Biden administration.
According to the newspaper's interlocutors, this is part of a coordinated campaign aimed at undermining the russian economy and forcing russian president vladimir putin to negotiate. US President Donald Trump stepped up his support for Kyiv after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in July, amid growing frustration with russia.
American intelligence, the sources said, helps Ukraine determine the routes, altitudes, times and parameters of missions, allowing drones to evade russian air defense systems.
Three sources familiar with the operation said Washington is involved in all stages of planning. One US official said that Ukraine selects the targets for strikes, and the United States provides information about their vulnerabilities. Other sources said that Washington prioritizes the targets itself. One of them called Ukrainian drones a "US tool" to undermine the russian economy and put pressure on putin
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump said that he had actually approved the supply of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the Institute for the Study of War noted that russia is trying to improve relations with the United States, combining nuclear blackmail and economic incentives, but at the same time refuses to negotiate with Ukraine and deliberately drags out the war.
