Rada confirms powers of local governments until elections after war

The Verkhovna Rada confirmed the powers of local governments until the elections after the war. This was announced by Yaroslav Zhelezniak, MP from the Holos faction, on the Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The Parliament voted for resolution No. 14301, on ensuring the continuity of the work of local councils and heads in wartime and postponing new local elections until the end of martial law. Simply put, there will be no local elections in October 2025. In favor - 308," he said.

Thus, 308 MPs voted for the relevant draft resolution No. 14301, with the minimum required 226.

The Verkhovna Rada recognized the impossibility of holding local elections during martial law, since it is impossible to guarantee compliance with democratic standards and the safety of the participants in the process.

The powers of the current local councils and mayors elected in legal elections were confirmed - they remain in office until new elections are held after the war.

The principle of continuity of power was emphasized - the stable work of local self-government is necessary to ensure order, defense and the vital activity of communities.

The resolution provides that after the end of the war, the decision on new local elections will be made in accordance with the Constitution, the Election Code and the laws of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in July, the Central Election Commission established the absence of grounds for the formation of a new composition of territorial election commissions for local elections.

The next local elections in Ukraine, according to electoral legislation, are held simultaneously throughout the country on the last Sunday of October of the fifth year of the powers of local councils and mayors and, accordingly, should be held on the last Sunday of October this year.

Due to russia's full-scale armed aggression, martial law has been introduced in Ukraine, during which no elections are organized or held, therefore, the decision to schedule regular local elections has not been made by the parliament. In June, the head of parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, announced that the Verkhovna Rada is developing a bill that will regulate the holding of elections after the end of russia's war in Ukraine.
