Ukraine can complete Khmelnytskyi NPP units without Bulgaria's help - Hrynchuk

Ukraine can build the third and fourth power units at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant without buying nuclear reactors from Bulgaria.

This was stated at a press conference by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Svitlana Hrynchuk, Economic Pravda writes, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"We are considering various options. We would not like to stop only at Bulgarian reactors. If it does not work out there, we need to consider other options. We are currently developing them with partners," said Hrynchuk.

The minister noted that Ukraine has both the technologies for construction and its own specialists.

And nuclear reactors can be purchased not only in Bulgaria.

Earlier, the Minister of Energy Svitlana Hrynchuk reported that Ukraine will continue negotiations with Bulgaria on the purchase of two VVER-1000 reactors for the power units of the Khmelnytskyi NPP.

The government plans to launch a project to complete power units No. 3 and No. 4 at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant next year.

The Cabinet of Ministers' program provides that by October 31, 2025, the feasibility study for the project will be updated, and by the end of 2025, a bill on the location, design, and construction of power units should be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 16, a permit came into force for the national nuclear power generating company Energoatom to purchase equipment (nuclear reactors and components) from the National Electricity Company of Bulgaria for the construction of power units at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant.

In mid-April, Bulgaria announced that it would not sell reactors from the Belene NPP to Ukraine for the Khmelnytskyi NPP.
