IAEA confirms that fuel for backup generators of Zaporizhzhia NPP will last 10 days - Energy Ministry

The Zaporizhzhia NPP, occupied by the aggressor country of russia, has been disconnected from the main power source for ten days. The operation of the station is provided by backup generators, but the fuel supply for them is limited.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported this today, October 1.

The department emphasized that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the danger of the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been without external power supply for ten days.

Members of the IAEA mission to the Zaporizhzhia NPP reported that the station is currently supplied by backup diesel generators.

"Current fuel reserves will last for 10 days for their operation," the report says.

IAEA Director General Rafael Gross emphasized that if the backup systems are disconnected, there is a threat of nuclear fuel meltdown. He called the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP unstable from the point of view of nuclear safety.

The Ministry of Energy once again called on the international community to increase pressure on russia to return the Zaporizhzhia NPP to Ukrainian control and prevent a nuclear disaster.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 23, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine announced that the Zaporizhzhia NPP had been disconnected from an external power source.

The British publication The Guardian wrote on September 27 that due to the blackout, the backup generators at the Zaporizhzhia NPP are forced to operate at full capacity. This may cause them to overheat and fail.

As a reminder, on September 30, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the failure of one of the backup generators that currently provide power to the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
